DuPont State Forest

DuPont State Forest offers visitors 83 miles of nature through various roads and trails. You can easily drive, bike, hike or jog through the park or you can enjoy horseback riding on the maintained trails. The park has also been known in feature films starting with Last of the Mohicans in 1992 and in 2012, the Hunger Games Movie was shot at Triple Falls. The Hunger Games movie brought in tourists from all over, giving the park and town revenue and a healthy exposure. Triple Falls is just one of six different waterfalls located throughout the forest.

Kids Activities

In the summer, those in Brevard, North Carolina enjoy a nice, mild climate, not too hot and not too cold. Precipitation is rare in the summer months making it the ideal place to learn about nature and the environment. There are two places where kids can enjoy Brevard in the summertime; each has its own features so every child will find something they enjoy during their summer break.

The first place is Gwynn Valley Summer Camp. This camp offers camp to those who have finished Kindergarten to the 8th grade. Here, kids will learn and enjoy nature. They will learn how to grow their own food, learn how farm animals work, enjoy horses and do a multitude of crafts. They will learn something new everyday and learn how to enjoy everything nature has to offer while learning how to live off the land.

The other place for kids is the Brevard Music Center. This center is for kids 14 years old and up who have shown exceptional skills in an orchestra or other large band ensemble. This is a 6-week program that runs from the end of June to the first part of August. It is an intense program that is complete with private instruction and multiple performances. This is the premier music education experience for any teen that aspires to be a top-performing musician.

People are happy in Brevard, which could be why there is a festival for just about every holiday. In the late spring, just before Memorial Day, there is the white squirrel festival, which salutes the rare creature that is often found around town. In the summer, fireworks are displayed, the car show is judged and the streets are shut down for the arts and crafts fair during the Independence Day Festival. Fall brings Halloweenfest, since the town is in Transylvania County; everyone is proud to dawn their best costumes and enjoy the haunted celebrations. The winter holiday season rounds out the celebrations with the Twilight Tour. This starts with the Rudolf 5K run at dawn and then extends throughout the day with live music, vendors and arts and crafts.
