Lake Lure, North Carolina Real Estate and Community Information

Lake Lure is a small city in Rutherford County. When you move to this town, you find yourself among the 1,192 residents that happily call it home. The little town has been the backdrop for several famous movies. Dirty Dancing (1987), Firestarter (1984) and The Last of the Mohicans (1982) were all filmed in whole or in part here. Visit Lake Lure to see what all the fuss is about.

History

The land upon which Lake Lure sits was first acquired in 1902 by Dr. Lucius B. Morse and his two brothers, Asahel and Hiram. The doctor’s wife is credited with giving the city its name. The Carolina Mountain Power Company was built in 1925, and the impoundment of the city was finished two years later.

The Great Depression put a halt to the development of the town. The lake and dam were foreclosed on, but the Town of Lake Lure bought back much of the land and buildings in 1965. Since that time, the city has slowly grown to be what it is today. If you are looking for small town life and quaint beauty, this is the city for you.

Parks and Recreation

The green spaces available to residents and visitors are absolutely breathtaking. Whether you want to hike, bike or walk, you can do so in any one of the many parks in the town. One of the most popular parks is Chimney Rock State Park. Visitors to the park enjoy Rumbling Bald Mountain that comprises acres of land. The boulders and cliffs are not only beautiful to look at, but they are perfect for rock climbing.
